Setting up NETGEAR switches

NETGEAR switches are used throughout Cloud Direct wired networks to connect Ethernet cables from a number of devices together. Switches used in larger networks may be linked. Advantages of using switches include:

  • Allow dozens of devices to connect.
  • Keep traffic between two devices from getting in the way of other devices using the same network.
  • Allow control of who has access to various parts of the network.
  • Allow you to monitor usage.
  • Allow fast speed communication (within your network).

This article identifies the NETGEAR switch types found most commonly in Cloud Direct networks, and shows where you can find all the information you need for your NETGEAR switch.

Because NETGEAR have provided comprehensive information for the use of their switches, the article focuses on pointing the reader to the relevant information. However, in addition to this article, if you require further assistance with your Cloud Direct provided router, then please contact Cloud Direct Technical Services on 0800 368 1831, or email TechServices@clouddirect.net.

NETGEAR switches used by Cloud Direct

Cloud Direct networks commonly use the following NETGEAR switch types:

  • Smart switches
  • Fully managed switches

Smart switches

NETGEAR provide a number of Smart Switches. The three most commonly used by Cloud Direct are the Gigabit Smart Managed Switches; GS108Tv1, GS108Tv2, and GS110TP. These models are Gigabit switches with eight 10/100/1000 Mbps ports. The GS110TP offers PoE capability.

Fully managed switches

NETGEAR provide a number of Fully Managed Switches. The most commonly used by Cloud Direct are the M4100 series, of which there are twelve different models, ranging from a 10-port Fast Ethernet (M4100-D10-PoE) switch to a 50-port Gigabit Ethernet (M4100-50G-PoE) switch. The NETGEAR M4100 series delivers a secure, intelligent edge in commercial buildings and large campus LAN environments. A Fully Managed Switch has its own web interface for management.
