Cloud Backup and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) increases the security of user logins for cloud services by requiring more than a simple password. For more information, see Multi-Factor Authentication for Office 365.

Today, Cloud Backup supports MFA for all Office 365 users except the Office 365 Global Administrator provided during subscription configuration.

Security Best Practices for the Office 365 Global Administrator

  • Create an unlicensed Office 365 Global Administrator to be used solely for the Cloud Backup application
  • Prior to providing the Office 365 Global Administrator credentials, use a 3rd party tool (e.g. LastPass) to randomly generate a very strong password.

For current subscriptions, this Global Administrator can be found on the Settings tab of the subscription in the SkyKick Partner Portal.

Development underway toward full MFA support

As of October 28, Cloud Backup no longer requires any SkyKick-created admins or users. Therefore, the Cloud Backup Administrator (see 1 below), the four backup and restore users (see 2 below), and the security group in which they exist can all be removed.
