Meet The Team: Matt Amphlett
By Stuart Janicki • 07 Mar 2012
A fairly recent addition to the Service Team, Matt Amphlett is a support technician and has been with Backup Direct since September 2011. Matt is originally from Cambridge, where he had been working in a similar role for a small firm who supply and support computer equipment for university students with disabilities.
How did you end up in the job?
My parents were the ones who recommended the position. They live in Bath and had seen an article in the local paper. It was a story of success in the face of adversity. The article described a company that, despite the state of the economy had posted a growth rate of over 40% for the 3rd year running and who were once again looking to expand by opening new positions in all areas of the business. My parents suggested I apply for the support position and a few months later I found myself in Bath.
What do you like about the company?
There are many reasons I would recommend the company but the thing that stands out most for me is the focus on people. Whether it be clients or employees there is a clear commitment to keeping people enthused about the business. For example the company provides a "Fun Fund" which employees can use as they wish to help make On Direct a more enjoyable place to work. In turn this also benefits our clients as hopefully the positive attitude it fosters comes across in our interactions.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy helping people and getting stuck into technical issues. So I think I'm in the ideal job really. I am also granted the freedom to go that extra mile and offer advice on problems outside the scope of the services we provide.
What are your hobbies?
Being in tech support I enjoy all the geeky stuff, reading sci-fi, watching sci-fi, playing sci-fi games, but I am also partial to a bit of fantasy. However, I do actually leave my flat from time to time for some outdoor pursuits, mountain biking, snowboarding, kickboxing, rock climbing and traveling. I enjoy exploring new places and with a girlfriend in Germany I get plenty of opportunity.

I like a nice strong mature Cheddar on a digestive biscuit with a healthy dollop of sweet onion chutney.
It has to be Firefox, though I quite like Dolphin on Android.
