Azure Site Recovery uses Microsoft Azure, a flexible and secure cloud platform for networking, storage, computing, databases, apps, Internet of Things, web and mobile. Azure Site Recovery replicates your on-premises physical servers and virtual machines to Azure, or even to a secondary data centre if you have one. If an outage occurs in your primary location, you fail over to the secondary location within moments and your applications and workloads will continue to be available. When normal operations resume, you fail back to your primary location.
Azure Site Recovery means you can achieve lower recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) targets for every major system in your organisation. You can protect your business against outages of critical systems including SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, SAP and Oracle and maintain availability of your data and applications during an unplanned event.
Use policies that you set and control to automate the replication of the virtual machines. Azure Site Recovery protects Hyper-V, VMware and physical servers, plus you can use Azure or your secondary data centre as your recovery site.
Azure Site Recovery co-ordinates and manages the ongoing replication of data by integrating with existing technologies, including System Center and SQL Server AlwaysOn.
Azure Site Recovery helps automate the orderly recovery of services in the event of a site outage at the primary data centre. Applications can be brought up in an orchestrated fashion to help restore service quickly, even for complex multi-tier workloads.
Recovery plans are simple to create and store in the Azure management portal. The plans can be as simple or as advanced as your business requirements demand, including the execution of custom Windows PowerShell scripts, Azure Automation Runbooks and pauses for manual interventions. Networks can also be customised by mapping virtual networks between the primary and recovery sites. These plans can be tested whenever you like without disrupting the services at your primary location.
Replicating your workloads to Azure offers new capabilities. Migrate applications to Azure with just a few clicks, or burst to Azure temporarily when you encounter a surge in demand. Run reports and analytics on copies of production workloads in Azure without having an impact on users. Test new versions of applications with copies of live data, and then seamlessly put the new version into production in your data centre.
Azure Site Recovery monitors the state of your protected instances continuously and remotely. When replicating between two sites that you control, your virtual machines’ data and replication remains on your networks. All communication with Azure is encrypted. When replicating to Azure as the secondary site, your data is encrypted, and you can also select encryption for data at rest.
