EU Privacy Shield Compliant Cloud Backup

The EU-U.S. Privacy Shield Framework was designed to protect the rights of people in the EU whose personal data is transferred to the United States. It also brings legal clarity for businesses relying on transatlantic data transfers.

It was designed by the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the European Commission, to provide companies on both sides of the Atlantic with a mechanism to comply with data protection requirements when transferring personal data from the European Union to the United States in support of transatlantic commerce.

The Privacy Shield program is administered by the International Trade Administration (ITA) within the U.S. Department of Commerce, and its commitments are enforceable under U.S. law.

SkyKick Cloud Backup Compliance

To join the Privacy Shield Framework, SkyKick certified to the US Department of Commerce, and publicly committed to comply with the Frameworks' requirements, including:

  • Strong data protection.
  • Safeguards on U.S. government access to data.
  • Effective protection and redress for individuals.
  • Annual joint review to monitor the implementation.

In addition to SkyKick Cloud Backup Security, that meets the standards of the frameworks, the processes by which Cloud Backup backs up and restores data, and the storage options it offers, limit the type and amount of data that leaves the EU. If using the SkyKick Azure tenant for storage, there are several EU Azure data centres to choose from. There is also the option for a partner or customer to use their own Azure data centre. Currently, metadata is indexed in the U.S., but no email content is ever stored anywhere other than the selected backup storage location.
